why?
Because no other system is as complete as yoga. Yoga zeroes in on what you need most to gain, and with your hard work, delivers exactly that. To further explain this point, if you are strong but not flexible, you will gain flexibility; if you are limber yet scatterbrained, it will encourage your concentration; if you are impatient, overworked or lethargic, yoga will boost your energy levels and teach you to relax; if you are sick or injured, in time and with conscious practice you will heal with yoga. Make no mistake, yoga is not for the faint of heart. As it is an effective form of natural healthcare and medicine, it surely delivers in slow, small doses. The purpose of yoga is to explore who you really are, a concept known as “Study of the Self” (svahdyaya), and give you the body you were meant to have.
how does it work?
Yoga incorporates breathing techniques (pranayama), physical postures (asana), meditation (pratyahara & dhyana), concentration (dhyrana) as well as other key principles in one class. Physically, you are stretching your muscles to their maximum elongated state and strengthening them, thus the commonly seen lean muscles of yogins (male practitioners) and yoginis (female practitioners) alike. This method of stretching and strengthening does wonders for your body. Yoga builds bone mass, raises your heart rate, softens your joints, cultivates stronger more flexible muscles and builds a solid foundation for a happy camper; you!
I'm not flexible! I can't do yoga.
Hrmph. This simple misconception prevents people from coming to class. If you think you are inflexible, yoga is precisely what you need most to do. It will improve your flexibility and create a more stable body for you to participate in other activities without injury. It is well known that tight muscles, stiff joints and not being conscious of your actions commonly lead to injury. Luckily, all of these things a regular yoga practice will serve. Show up to class and then go off and ski, hike, bike, herd cows, ride horses, chase your kids in the park, kayak or sip sangria with your girlfriends on your porch. Simple.
is it cardiovascular and can I lose weight?
Yes and yes. It takes time and diligence to learn this healing art, but without a doubt you will transform your body - and hopefully transform the point of view you have about your body, your age, the bad hairdo, and even your imperfect parents.
I'm too old/too young/too rigid to do yoga.
Please excuse me for contradicting you, but you are never too old, too young, too sick or too anything to start yoga for the first time or even for the 100th time.
